On the 18th November Amber Rudd made a speech entitled “New Direction for UK Energy Policy” which had been eagerly awaited as a “policy re-set”. 

It received a mixed response. The proposed switch from coal to gas was akin to "trying to go dry by switching from vodka to super strength cider" according to Green MP Caroline Lucas.

The future emphasis was firmly on government support for gas and nuclear, with explicit cost ultimatums for offshore wind and other renewables.  This gas and nuclear “cost-effective” route to decarbonisation is yet to be proven.

However the UK is now the first country to propose a phase out date (2025) for unabated coal power, and commitment was reaffirmed to the Climate Change Act and the next carbon budget.
